At Mount Olive, we believe that worship, our weekly gathering around Word and Sacrament, is central to our life together. We especially value high quality music and art as gifts which we use to pray to God, to praise God, and to proclaim God. We embrace the Lutheran heritage of music, especially singing, as a profound way to experience and share the wonders of God’s love made known to all people through Jesus Christ.

Congregational Song

At the heart of music in the Lutheran Church is congregational song. Hymnody is a highly valued part of worship and is treasured at Mount Olive. The congregation sings eagerly, and in many and various ways: unison, harmony, canon, high and low voices, choir and even instruments will express the text of a stanza from time to time. And we make it a priority to teach our children how to participate fully in congregational song through our special Sunday Church School curriculum.

Our congregation draws its hymn repertoire from a vast wealth of cultural and historical sources, and it continues to grow, even as we cherish the great tradition handed down to us over the ages. For example, it would not seem odd at Mount Olive to sing a German Chorale, a Russian Orthodox Kyrie, and an African freedom song in the same service. Hymnody at Mount Olive also embraces a German tradition, going back to J. S. Bach, in which the organ or other instruments interpret the hymn in a prelude (most often improvised), and where each stanza has its own flavor, usually drawn from the text.

Mount Olive is a congregation that understands the joy of singing, and our members participate fully. Those who "sing out" do not seem out of place, and the texts are expressed meaningfully.

Instruments in Worship

Mount Olive has many talented instrumentalists in the congregation who periodically offer their musical gifts in worship. In addition to sharing great examples of musical repertoire, instrumentalists assist in the song of the people. Instrumentalists who wish to offer their gifts simply need to contact the cantor to schedule a date. Even custom-composed music may be used to assist the congregation in worship.

Church School Choir

As part of our Sunday Church School curriculum, we give our children the gift of learning about singing in church, an important part of their Lutheran heritage and their faith development. The children sing at worship services once a month, and, continuing a Mount Olive tradition, they lead the Procession of Choirs prior to the Christmas Eve Eucharist.
