| On the Feast of the Ascension, May 17, 2007, Mount Olive blessed its new icon of the Ascension. Having been carried
into the church in the entrance procession on Easter day and living at the altar for 40 days, it was again carried in procession to the columbarium in the north transept chapel where it was hung and blessed with prayer, water, incense and anointing.
Time and space are conflated as we gaze at the icon and into the spiritual world in which these holy persons exist together in eternity.

Given in memory of Pastor Heisley’s mother + Dorothy + the icon was written by Nicholas Markell of Hugo, Minnesota. Mr.
Markell, a widely known artist and iconographer, made major contributions to the imagery of Evangelical Lutheran Worship, including designing the logo and the introductory images to most rites. |
| The icon of the Ascension shows Jesus, the risen and
ascending One, at the top and center, surrounded by angels.
Jesus appears to be clothed in light, his right hand raised in
blessing, and his nimbus containing the sign of his
cross. |

Below his feet is the craggy top of the Mount of Olives at the base of which stands the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is accompanied by a mighty cloud of evangelists, apostles, angels and other witnesses. Her nimbus is decorated with flowers, the food for hummingbirds, Mrs. Heisley’s favorite wild creature. |
